Churches of Revelation: 2 Smyrna - Wax & Mirrors.

Smyrna was a harbor city (a beach town) that was well known for its temple to the “Mother Goddess” and its provincial imperial cult temples. Smyrna had paved streets, a library, and a gymnasium which led many to want to visit this city of wealth and prestige. Smyrna could have been a lot like the American Church today, in a position of relative comfort, but could see persecution looming on the not so distant horizon. The church in Smyrna was faced with the same question we are faced with today, will we mirror the culture or will we mirror the Gospel?

From Series: "Churches of Revelation"

Welcome to Element’s second sermon series of 2015; Churches of Revelation. Keep in mind, this series will not be about the end times, but instead will be focusing on Jesus (shocker) and the examination of our souls. We are starting a season that some from other traditions would call Lent, which is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, and repentance to reflect on what Jesus has done and continues to do. Lent is a time where we allow God’s Spirit to probe our hearts as we confess our sins, it is a season of repentance where we look at what God’s light shows when He invades our souls. It is meant to be a journey that eventually leads us through reflection and into the joy of Easter and resurrection.
