The Bible provides us with the great and true story of God. It is not primarily about rules, doctrines, promises, or moral guidance. Though it involves all of those, the Bible is primarily the story of God (and humanity). It begins with him as the initiator and creator and concludes with restoration and new creation. It is God’s story. Our story I within God’s Story.
In our day, because of the story of our culture, it is likely our default that we think of ourselves as the lead actor in our story. It is about us. This can impact how we think about following Jesus. For example, we may say that following Jesus starts with inviting Jesus into our life and heart, missing that we are surrendering our life and heart to Him. Or we may think that we invite Jesus into our story, missing how, in reality, he has invited us into his. He is the hero.
“The Bible has moved from being an object of my appreciation and study to being the subject of the life I live. The Bible is not so much something I think about as it is something I think with. It is not so much that I try to “apply the Bible to my life” (as if my life were the center…); rather, I need to apply my life to the Bible – that is, to “inhabit” its story.
– Christopher Wright
Many Christians have heard lots of biblical teaching and yet may find it challenging to summarize the overarching story of God and describe how God’s purpose and plan is woven throughout. We can tend to focus on verses or books, zooming in on one tree and not seeing the whole landscape of the forest.
