Week 17. James: A Faith That Works - James 5:12 - The Piling on of Words

Today, James tells us something that Jesus first said, “let your yes be yes and your no be no.” How easy is it now to add a few words to a statement trying to strengthen what we say? How often do we try to quote statistics (that may or may not be true) or use words like “they say…” when we don’t know who “they” are? When James talks about oaths it would mean to invoke some supernatural power in support of what we are saying.

From Series: "James - A Faith That Works"

There is a long and protracted focus on our faith resulting in works in the book of James. The emphasis on works has caused some people to put the apostle Paul’s view of grace at odds with the views James, but nothing could be further from the truth. James is most likely the earliest letter written in the New Testament and as such show a strong pastoral care for how to live out our faith in Jesus in practical ways.
